About National Science, Technology and Innovation Foresight 2018
The National Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Foresight 2018 initiative has recently been launched by the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI). The outputs of this initiative will be provided to the team (based at the Department of Science and Technology) which is developing the next ten-year national plan for STI. This plan will shape, at a national level, the allocation of resources to STI-related priorities, aimed at the socio-economic development of the country, over the next ten years.
The process being followed for the Foresight exercise consists of several phases and activities, and draws on relevant work and available information, including:
- Global science and technology trends;
- Analyses of the performance of South Africa’s National System of Innovation;
- Stakeholder workshops;
- Email and web-based mechanisms to allow participation by a wide range of stakeholders;
- Identification and analysis of STI-related priorities, with a time horizon of the year 2030.

The process is planned to be completed by the end of 2018.
For those who wish to play a role in shaping the outcome of the initiative, the email and web-based mechanisms will allow participation by anyone, through contributing towards steering the direction of the initiative.The process will also include a series of three workshops involving limited numbers of STI stakeholders. These workshops are scheduled to take place starting about mid-year. They will be held in Gauteng, with participation from across the country.Along with the email and web-based mechanisms, the first workshop will form a key part of the process to identify the STI areas on which the two subsequent workshops will be focused. During the latter two workshops, interactive, participative, Foresight methods will be used to identify and begin elaborating STI-related priorities for a 2030 time frame.
