Indicators Reference Group (IRG)
Mandate:
The strategic objective of the Indicators Reference Group (IRG) is to monitor and advise on the process of developing a comprehensive science, technology and innovation indicator system that will form part of the national statistical system and inform long range strategic planning in South Africa.
Background:
The IRG was established in 2005 as a national sub-committee of the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) to ensure the development and operation of an appropriate indicator system. The Indicators Programme, responsible for the management of the National R&D and Innovation Surveys resided within NACI until 2006. In 2006 the programme was transferred to the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the agreement that the DST would take over the management function of the National R&D and Innovation Surveys. NACI, through the IRG, remains responsible for further analysis of indicators, and for developing related advice regarding the NSI from these.
