HR operationalisation workshop

10 November 2004

A study on the dynamics of the supply and demand of human resources (HR) in the National System of Innovation (NSI), was recently launched when a workshop was held to draft a framework. The workshop was attended by specialists from the NACI Council, NRF, HSRC, SAQA, several universities and the business sector.

The objectives of the meeting were to

  • Get an overview of available databases and identify gaps
  • Consider the use of a modelling approach to describe the dynamics of the system
  • Develop a design for the study
  • To establish a small network of experts in the field

The delegates agreed that there were sufficient data to address most of the research questions at the micro and meso levels, a bottom-up approach as it were. However, there was an urgent need for an understanding of the dynamics of how the system would behave under varying circumstances and it was concluded that addressing this challenge would require a modelling, i.e. a top-down, approach.

The next phase of the study entails finalising the design and identifying service providers.
