| NACI Councillor nominated for 'Top ICT Businessman in Africa Award' |

| Mr Fairoz Jaffer, NACI Councillor and CEO of Abnoba has been named one of the finalists for the Top ICT Businessman in Africa Award for 2005. As the premier ICT awards programme event in Africa, the African ICT Achievers Awards honours and rewards excellence in ICT from both a company and individual perspective. It aims to reward growth, innovation and self-sustainability among African entrepreneurs and to create role models in the industry. |
| Prof Pistorius re-appointed as Vice-Chancellor of UP |

| Prof Calie Pistorius, the Chairperson of the NACI Council, has been appointed for a second term as principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Pretoria. The decision to offer him a second term, was taken the end of November at a university council meeting. |
| Dr Rob Adam to join the Nuclear Energy Corporation of SA |

| Dr Rob Adam, CEO of NACI and DG of the Dept of Science & Technology is to join the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa. Cabinet yesterday approved the adjustment of the term of office of Dr Rob Adam as Director-General in the Department of Science and Technology to coincide with the time of his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA). Dr Adam will most likely begin at NECSA on 1 March 2006. |
| Inauguration of SALT |

| President Thabo Mbeki has officially opened the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) on 10 November 2005, at Sutherland in the Northern Cape. SALT is the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere, and equal to the largest in the world. SALT can detect objects a billion times too faint to be seen by the naked eye, something as dim as a candle flame on the moon. |

The publication contains the main data series selected from OECD countries, and a selection of non-OECD countries, including South Africa (SA). This achievement is meaningful for SA as it highlights our performance in Science and Technology internationally. |

| NACI Councillor receives an honorary doctorate |

| Prof Jennifer Thomson, a NACI Councillor, received an honorary doctorate from the Sorbonne University in June. Prof Thomson pursues her research interests at the University of Cape Town. She specialises in the genetic modification of plants with the ultimate aim of producing crops with improved tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. She won the L'Oreal Woman in Science (Africa category) award in 2004. |

| Expression of Interest: Mixed methods research study |

| The South African Reference Group on Women in Science and Technology (SET4W) invites submissions for the preparation of a mixed methods research study to design a suitable monitoring and evaluation framework to regularly evaluate the performance of women in and the contribution of the respective genders to the input and output of the NSI and to highlight strengths/weaknesses in gender-specific research. |

| The Global Network for the Economics of Learning, Innovation and Competence Building Systems is calling for papers for Globelics Africa 2005. The Conference will be held in Pretoria, South Africa, from 31 October to 4 November 2005. The Conference aims to examine the links between innovation, development and growth, as well as building research capacity in Africa. |

| South African National Survey of Research and Experimental Development |

| The Department of Science and Technology commissioned the Knowledge Management Research Programme of the HSRC to conduct the 2001/02 Survey of National Research and Experimental Development inputs, according to the guidelines laid down in the Frascati Manual. The documents are available for download and cover the methodology employed and the results for the five sectors covered in the survey. |
