NACI External Review 2008

The National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) advises the Minister of Science and Technology of South Africa, and through the Minister, the Cabinet, on the role and contribution of science, mathematics, innovation and technology, including indigenous technologies, in promoting and achieving national objectives.

Principles of good governance dictate that NACI is subjected to regular reviews and assessments of its performance. In line with this internal assessments are performed annually, while external assessments are conducted every four years to coincide with the term of office of a particular NACI Council. NACI is due for an external review of its performance over the period 2004-2007.

The External Review of the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) will take place from 5 to 9 May 2008 in Pretoria.

The general purpose of the NACI Review is to assess the role and mandate of NACI as a body advising the Minister of Science and Technology, with cognisance of the context within which it functions: A continuously changing and evolving National System of Innovation (NSI). The emphasis of the recommendations that will emerge from the NACI Review will be on the future role of NACI and its continued relevance within the NSI.

The review panel comprises both international and local experts. The review will be based on interviews with, and written inputs from, key stakeholders in the NSI. In addition to this, the panel will undertake an analysis of the various documents, reports and advice generated by NACI over the period.
