Feeding the Biotechnology Pipeline

NBAC, a subcommittee of NACI, has identified a need to host a national workshop on “Feeding the biotechnology pipeline”, the main objective of which is to promote and sustain the generation of knowledge and production of innovation skills that are able to support biotechnology growth in South Africa. Feeding the biotechnology pipeline for a knowledge driven bio-economy requires taking into consideration a core innovation value chain of activities as depicted in the figure below.
The business unit is the appropriate level for construction of the core innovation value chain which includes business functions such as:
- Research and Development (basic and applied);
- Design of Products, Services, or Processes;
- Production;
- Marketing & Sales; and
- Distribution
- Customer Service
This workshop aims to bring together stakeholders and representatives from public and private sectors including NGOs to explore in particular the scope and nature of challenges related to Feeding The biotechnology Pipeline in the following themes:
- IP awareness;
- Funding gaps;
- Human capacity; and
- Regulatory issues.
Further more, the workshop is intended to provide a forum for sharing information and experience among government officers, entrepreneurs, and research scientists involved in policy making and technology R&D in the field of biotechnology.
