Session of the Wise Seminar
Just over sixty participants and experts from various sectors took time away from their schedule on Wednesday, April 22nd in Pretoria, to take part in a captivating seminar “Session of the Wise on Strengthening Skills in Mathematics, Science and Technology”. This session was hosted by the NACI Task Team on Skills who’s objective is to evaluate and advise on strengthening skills in mathematics, science and technology in order to support innovation in the education and training value chain.
The seminar aimed to initiate discourse amongst experts who are involved in mathematics and science education and generally in the human capital development landscape, on appropriate interventions to strengthen skills in mathematics, science and technology.
Dr Nhlanhla Nduna-Watson, Dr Sizwe Mabizela, Dr Mafu Rakometsi, Prof Yunus Ballim, and Dr Vuyo Mahlati, among other speakers, inspired participants on strategies and levers that would introduce a step change in mathematics and science education through passionate dialogue. Prof Ballim shared his view on how learners could easily grasp the mathematics or science concepts when taught in their mother tongue.
NGOs on the ground such as Sasol Inzalo Foundation, ORT South Africa, Ikamva Youth, Old Mutual, and Thusanani Foundation shared their initiatives and the successful models they have used to introduce impactful programmes on the ground.
